Τα ταξίδια του Lewis και του Clark οδήγησαν σε πολλές γεωργικές ανακαλύψεις, και όχι μόνο στην ανακάλυψη νέων εδαφών. Οι ιστορικοί λένε ότι καθώς η αποστολή ταξίδευε στον ποταμό Μιζούρι αναζητώντας το Βορειοδυτικό Πέρασμα, τα μέλη της αποστολής σημείωσαν προσεκτικά τις γεωργικές πρακτικές που συνάντησαν.
Οι ιθαγενείς Ινδιάνοι της Αμερικής ανέπτυξαν αυτές τις πρακτικές και οι σημειώσεις υποδεικνύουν ότι ο Lewis και ο Clark βρήκαν πολλά μόνιμα χωριά των Ινδιάνων, μερικά από τα οποία είχαν το μέγεθος του St. Louis ή μεγαλύτερα, και όχι τις νομαδικές φυλές που πιστεύονταν ότι ακολουθούσαν κοπάδια βουβάλων. Ο λόγος; Γεωργία. Αυτοί οι ιθαγενείς Αμερικανοί θα μπορούσαν να τραφούν, να επιβιώσουν και να ευδοκιμήσουν χωρίς να μετακινηθούν.
